When the studio is empty…

Tuesday was slow for me. I had talked with a couple clients and booked a couple upcoming shoots, but nothing was really happening in the studio. So, what do I do?!? Baby picture day!!!!! My friend came over with his babies and I brought my little boys in. We took some pictures and had some fun. Here are a couple pics from the afternoon…

OK, so baby pictures may not exactly help support my rock and roll photographer image, but I can’t help it. I love my boys and we had a blast using the studio on an otherwise empty studio day.

Event pics are big in Dallas…

Sure, a lot of people know me for the cover photos I’ve done for publications like Quick and American Profile. They’ve seen the major label album covers I’ve shot or the musicians I’ve photographed for Spin Magazine or The Dallas Morning News. However, I don’t think many people realize just how much event photography is shot in Dallas. I do a ton of it, and I am only one of many here in North Texas that can keep pretty busy shooting this stuff.
Call it what you want – party pics, event photos, fete set shots, etc… People love seeing the fashionable and famous out and about. Companies need their important events recorded on film. Charities want photos of their galas and balls. Corporate sponsors want to use pics from the parties they throw for their internal and external marketing. If you can shoot a party well, you can keep busy in DFW!

These tear sheets came from a recent issue of FD Luxe – a hot North Texas fashion/style magazine.

If you like sports portraits, you’ll love this!!!

I ran across this website/blog today, and I was impressed with the work. Kelly Kline does a lot of sports-related photography for editorial and commercial clients. I’ve done shoots for Slam Magazine (a basketball magazine) in the past, and I noticed several photos she’s also done for Slam. It looks like shoe’s also done work for ESPN and a bunch of sports pubs that I’ve never heard of (but, I don’t really follow sports, so I’m sure there are plenty of great athletic magazines that I’m clueless about).

Anyway, she has some great “behind the scenes” pics on her blog that will answer some of your “how did she did that?” lighting questions. And, even if you aren’t looking for tips and tricks for shooting better, you can still be wowed by all the great athlete portraits and action shots she has…

I would SOOOO love to be using this right now…

Of course, I’m not so rich that I can just buy this for the heck of it, and 99.995% of my clients don’t need a file that big. It would just be overkill for all my newspaper clients and most of my magazine clients. But, how I would soooo love to pull my Hasselblad gear out of storage and start clicking away again. Maybe I’ll score another big $50k shoot that will allow me to pay for this? Think it will happen in the current economy?!? I’ll keep my fingers crossed, but I won’t be holding my breath.

Are you following my State Fair of Texas posts?!?

In case you didn’t know, I’ve been posting a daily State Fair of Texas photo over on the Quick website. If you love the fair as much as I do, you should be checking their blog daily at noon! Here’s a link to a couple of the recent picture posts:

I will post one for each day of the Texas State Fair, so keep coming back y’all!

The audience can be even more fun!!!

Sometimes the audience can be even more entertaining than the band playing on stage. Take the recent Slayer and Megadeth concert, for example. I had some really great pictures of the bands performing, but I couldn’t resist getting a few images of the audience getting rowdy. People were being pummeled in the mosh pit and getting hit by crowd surfers. This shot of mine ran in the Dallas Morning News and proves that audience pics can be just as fun to shoot…

This is what I see at night…

I wind up shooting in night clubs all the time – capturing the energy, the lights, the color, the movement… making a still photo look and feel like the real thing. This is where I go when I try to capture Dallas on film at 1am. This is what I see. This is what I do…

ASMP 30/30 Gallery Show…

The ASMP Dallas chapter’s gallery show that I put together (with plenty of help from the other board members) seemed to be a big hit last weekend. The show is still hanging at Kettle Art Gallery tonight and tomorrow night, if you want to check it out for yourself. In the meantime, here’s a little video of the opening reception…

Tom Petty in the DMN…

I hope you saw today’s issue of the Dallas Morning News. Besides some pretty good stories and features in the other sections, you would’ve had the chance to read Mario’s review of the Tom Petty and ZZ Top concert at Superpages.com Center… Starplex, as most of us still call it, decades later.
Of course, the main reason to read the Tom Petty review is to see my pics of the show. I was actually asked to shoot both acts, but only Petty made the paper. Too bad, because I had some real nice ZZ Top stuff. Maybe I’ll share it here on the blog later. Anyway, be sure to pick up the paper this weekend, too. It looks like I’m shooting Slayer and Megadeth, which should run in the Sunday edition!
