Looking Back at Some Chefwear Fun…

I had a lot of fun doing the photography for the Dallas issues of last year’s Chefwear catalog.  It was a total blast!  I recently ran into one of the chefs again, and it got me thinking about some of the cool photos I have that were either extras, alternate takes, or they didn’t make one of the three issues due to available space.  I figured it would be fun to dig back through one of the shoot days and post a few images of some of Dallas’ finest chefs!
If you like these catalog lifestyle photos, you should check out more of my work at www.janikphoto.com and then give me a call to shoot your next campaign!

The “Almost” Presidential Oval Office…

I got a chance to work with a great British news syndication service to shoot this video feature on Ron Wade, a man in Longview, TX who built an exact replica of the president’s oval office in his house.  Well, almost exact… he said it is slightly smaller in diameter, due to his local zoning laws.  This story sure was fun to shoot!  I love being a videographer and photographer in Texas, because there’s an endless amount of stories to document in this huge state!

You can see more of my photos and videos shot in Dallas, Austin, and all around the lone star state, by visiting www.janikphoto.com, or by digging through my blog archive.

Cowboys & Indians Feature Story…

If you pick up the current issue of Cowboys & Indians magazine, you’ll see a feature story I photographed, called Holiday Cheers.  It has been great working with such a great publication, and I’m excited for the next issue to hit stands, as well.  I should have some more great photos in that one, too!

You can see some of my other magazine feature story photo shoots by digging through this blog’s archives, or by visiting my main website at www.janikphoto.com

Dallas Observer Music Awards 2013…

That’s right!  If you caught the last couple issues of the Dallas Observer, you probably recognized the cover photo credits.  I was selected to shoot the DOMA 25th anniversary nominees issue, and again for the winners issue!  It was fun getting to shoot these wonderful leaders in the north Texas music industry.  The scene has come a long way since I started going to shows back in the early 1990’s.
If you want to see the full issues, the Observer keeps a download archive in their e-edition section, located at www.dallasobserver.com, as there are plenty more of my pictures in these two issues.  This is just a taste!

Austin Photographers Unite!!!

I’m teaching a photography workshop in Austin, TX this weekend, and the best part is the admission price… FREE!!!  Yup, it’s sponsored by Pentax, so you’ll get to shoot and learn with me on their dime!  Cool, huh?!?  Their new camera is actually kind of cool looking, so I might put my Canon down for a bit and try their system, but you are welcome to bring whatever gear you are currently using.  Just be sure to follow the directions on the flyer to RSVP.

Dallas Summer Concerts…

Brad Paisley, Train, and The Jonas Brothers… all were very entertaining concerts to photogarph.  I can see why the fans were so excited!  I’m sure I’ll be back at Gexa Energy Pavilion a few more times before the summer is over.  It’s definitely a great place to see shows in Dallas!

Shooting an Album Cover Last Year…

I was looking through my files this morning, and noticed I had photographed some images on July 10, 2012… or, exactly one year ago today.  It’s fun to look back and see what I was doing last year, and I thought I’d share it with you!  Maybe I should go back and see if I had any shoots on this day in 2011, 2010, or earlier?  Maybe I should go back fifteen years, looking at the stuff I was assigned to photograph when I was still in college?  Well, maybe those photos are better off forgotten…
Anyway, this was an album photo shoot for the band POV – also known as People On Vacation – a duo formed by Jaret Reddick and Ryan Hamilton.  It’s pretty catchy music, definitely worth giving a listen to.

Super Moon 2013…

Astronomical photography really isn’t my thing, but I still enjoy taking moon pictures every once in a while.  It’s pretty easy to do, and even a 200mm focal length will get you a good web-size image that shows the moon’s detail.  This was taken during the “super moon” phase, which is supposed to be the closest this wonderful satellite will be to the earth this year.  I suppose that helps a little!  If you have access to a 600mm lens (and you can use a 2x extender with it, to give you a 1200mm focal length), then you can get a nice big image, worthy of printing.

You can view plenty of non-moon photos on my website at www.janikphoto.com.

Dallas Billboard Photographer?!?

I know I’ve told you about the fun advertising campaign I worked on with the Perot Museum earlier this year.  I’ve seen my photos pop up in all sorts of newspaper and magazine ads, and I finally stumbled upon one of the billboards.  This one is going north on Central Expressway – also known as Interstate 75 – and can be seen by tons of people every day!  Pretty cool, huh?  I’ve had my photos appear on other billboards across the country, but this is the first one I’ve seen in Dallas, TX, with my own eyes.
Here is a picture of the billboard in action!  It’s shot from the frontage road.  Though the view from the highway is much better, it’s not the safest place to stop and take a photo (at least, not while cars are whizzing by at 70 miles and hour!)
Another view of the billboard, from a safer vantage point…
