Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!!!

Another old pic from the days when I would be shooting another band every few days… This one is of the New York art punk group Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The show was at the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas‘ music and nightlife Mecca, Deep Ellum. The band came through town on October 10, 2006 and totally blew away the audience. I still remember the show, and it was amazing!

Dear Etta James…

I remembered shooting Etta James several years back, but couldn’t recall exactly when. Well, today I found the photos while doing some digital house cleaning. I was hired to photograph Etta James during a performance in Dallas.
The show was in 2007 and I still remember the concert pretty well. I remember that she had quite few interesting stories to tell in between songs… most of them were too racy to share! I remember that her voice was so expressive, and the rasp that came with age only added to its interest.
I’m glad that I had a chance to photograph this legend. There are so many people that I wanted to shoot and I wound up missing for one reason or another. But, you can never shoot them all, I guess!

Time To Get Wet…

It is burning hot in North Texas right now. This triple digit weather is murder! Luckily, my most recent cover story photo shoot for Quick was a cool one. I will admit, though… it was a little scary taking my expensive Canon 5DmkII and my Profoto AcuteB 600r strobe pack and ring light in the water with me. One slip and I would’ve lost a LOT of great photo gear on this shoot! No accidents, though. Everything went well and the models were great to work with.

In case you were wondering exactly how this sexy photo feature was shot, you can find out all the juicy details in the behind-the-scenes video. Luckily, John Jones – my friend, occasional photo assistant and amateur photo/video dabbler – was there to capture this pool party on his new Canon 60D. Wouldn’t it be nice if all my Dallas photo shoots were at Hotel ZaZa’s pool? I could get used to that!

Just Call Me Mr. File Photo…

99.9995% of viewers would’ve never known who took these photos, unless I legally changed my name to Mr. File Photo. As part of my contract with certain publications, they are required to credit me on new images, but they are allowed to run old photos with a “file photo” credit. That means all my pics that were reused for the latest Super Bowl edition of the Guide get labeled with the generic photo credit.

That’s my Snoop Dogg shot, as well as my Sean Diddy Combs image.
The Pitbull photo? Yup, that’s mine.

Who shot Manhattan Lounge and Ghostbar? You guessed it.
I have photographed The Flaming Lips several times over the years. This photo of mine was taken at the NX35 Festival in Denton, TX, last year. I’m supposed to be shooting Wayne Coyne and company in concert tomorrow night. I think it will be my seventh or eighth time…

Shooting events or sports? Combine the two!!!

I’ve shot tons of corporate events for clients, getting pictures of guests mingling, candid shots of people enjoying the event and posed photos of important attendees. I’ve also had to shoot plenty of sporting events for newspapers over the years, getting action shots of players and scene-setting shots of the game. What most photographers don’t realize is they are missing out on an opportunity. They can combine the two shooting styles and gain a whole new client base… they can start shooting corporate-sponsored sports outings!
The most popular events are golf outings, though corporations or charities sponsor all sorts of sporting events, like bowling, softball and even skeet shooting. If you can shoot a good combination of sports action and event photography, these events will be a natural extension of what you currently do.
So, don’t overlook the potential of gaining new clients through their sporting events. These are often very important events for them, and they need good pictures to share with their clients and customers!

Not photography related…

I know you all follow my blog for photo tips, or to hear stories about my shoots around north Texas. Well, this post is not photo related. I just wanted to give you all a heads up, in case you feel like joining me.

Either the first or second week of February, I will be taking a large supply of hats, mittens and assorted clothing downtown to give to the homeless. Most likely, I will be doing this at The Bridge – the area’s homeless shelter. I purchased approximately 60 pairs of mittens, 40 warm hats, and a dozen or two shirts and light jackets.
Remember that February is still very cold for north Texas, and the average evening temperatures reach down to the thirties. Do you want to help out? Do you have blankets, shoes, socks, underwear, etc? Let’s do this!

Mario Lopez…

Someone said November was national Post a Blog a Day Month. Whether that’s true or not, I’ll try my best to do it. We’ll see how far I actually get. To start things out, I’ll post a link to my picture of Saved By The Bell actor Mario Lopez:
