Recent Work…

I know I’ve been neglecting my blog. Going a few weeks without a post just isn’t right, and I am sorry. I’ve been pretty busy, having shot several concerts, a music video, some band promos, some corporate events and images for company brochures, some cool nightlife images, and the normal VIP event type stuff… lots of photos are being taken!
I’ll try to get a copy of the new D Magazine that’s out, so I can share the couple pages I’ve got, and I’ll also try to scan some catalog and brochure work I’ve recently done. In the meantime, I’ll put up some recently published images from the DMN and FD Luxe. Enjoy…

I’ve Been Busy, But Still Had Fun…

Usually, if I don’t post a blog in a while, it’s because I’ve been too busy with work and/or life. This last week or so has been an equal amount of both. Besides shooting for several of my regular clients (The museum, a couple charity organizations, and the DMN), I took assignments from several new ones (including a Floral Industry trade magazine, a worldwide database software corporation, and a platinum-selling rock and roll band). I also found time to play some video games on the classic Nintendo NES with my boys, take some Easter photos in the park, and have a backyard BBQ or two!
This week I will be equally as busy, so I may not be posting much again. I have a laundry list of things (including the actual laundry, finish my taxes, do a shoot for a retail baking industry trade magazine, shoot a wedding, and spend more time with the boys while the weather is still nice outside).

My Boy, The Star…

One of my clients is the children’s museum, which is perfect for my family. They can actually tag along on some of my shoots and enjoy the activities at the museum while I work. The other benefit is they sometimes get to be stars! That’s my middle boy blowing the big bubble at the top of the new brochure. Isn’t he cute?!?

Finally, Some Photos…

I know my last several posts have not included any photos. They’ve either been links to interesting videos or posts filled with text and nothing else. Well, hopefully this will make up for it. It’s just some random shots I took during a gig, extra images that didn’t run from a story, etc…

These two shots are from a Misfits concert at Trees in Deep Ellum. The crowd was wild that night!

This is Bob. He’s a Deep Ellum regular. If you go down there at all, chances are that you’ve met him before.
This is me and musician Ben Kweller backstage at The Granada Theater. He’s a real nice guy.

These two shots are from a concert at The Granada. The top one is Rhett Miller and the one below is Ben Kweller.

This band is The Phuss performing at the recently re-opened Club Dada.
That’s me with Jordin Sparks from American Idol after a shoot. She was very nice!

Shooting Old Buildings…

Someone at a photo-related forum that I frequent told me about this show called PhotoXplorers. Yeah, I know… ignore the stupid name and just watch the clip below. The show follows these shooters into old abandoned buildings. There are a lot of shooters like this in Dallas, so maybe the show will give you some ideas for some non-Texas locations to visit and shoot?

A Quick Tip, Volume 1…

Always be prepared to roll with the changes. Clients can be very fickle. VERY fickle. You need to be ready to do something they originally asked for in your estimate/quote, then asked to scratch from the shoot, then asked to add back in, then modified, then scratched from the shoot schedule due to time constraints and finally added back in… about an hour before the shoot started. They are very fickle.

My Favorite Photos of 2010…

I know what you’re thinking. Here is a guy that’s photographed stars like Taylor Swift, Diane Lane, Jay Z and Tom Petty this year. Surely, one of them must be on the “best of” list of photos for 2010. Here is a photographer that had his images in countless feature stories and on numerous magazine covers. No doubt, one of them must be his favorite photo of the year.
All of those images are special to me, but none are as important as these photos taken this year…

More Old Pictures…

Well, I decided to thumb through some more old photo files, and I came up with another random sampling to share. This group runs from about 2004 to 2009, and includes magazine feature and cover shots, test shots, concert shots and personal project shots. It really is just a random sampling of stuff that caught my eye…

This is a photo of the Texas Star ferris wheel, shot with my Holga, probably shot around 2004 or 2005.

Comedian Carlos Mencia photographed in 2006.
This is a test photo I did of myself, the day before I shot the album cover for the last Rhett Miller solo album. I don’t normally do a lot of testing for specific shoots, but this one required me to get a very particular look.
I forget this guy’s name off the top of my head (I’m sure a quick google search would find it again), but he was the keyboard player for Cat Power. I shot her concert a few years back for The News.

This lady was the oldest active professional female bucking bronco rider in the world when I shot her several years back for a magazine cover story. Her name is Jan Youren and she was inducted in to the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 1993. In this photo, I captured her picking herself up and dusting off after falling from a horse.
This is the Denton banded Mount Righteous. The group is about ten members strong. Because the band is so big, they were a challenge to shoot! I think it turned out well, though…

Another Mount Righteous shot from January 2009. We found an abandoned car dealership and used my Profoto AcuteB 600r packs to light the band. I wanted to do something fun and different with the photos, to match the band’s style and sound. I think I succeeded.
This is Daniel Folmer, a local folk and pop singer.
Play and Skillz, a Dallas duo that has produced hit singles for some of the biggest acts in the world. They even have a grammy to prove it!
Another Dallas band… Airline. We all had fun on this shoot!
