Yes, it does snow in Texas!!!

I had to shoot popular indie band Midlake for a recent cover story. The band is based in Denton, TX, and the shoot was set for the last days of December 2009. As I made the 45 minute drive north, the weather turned pretty bad. I didn’t mind so much, as it gave me a chance to shoot the band in the snow – something that Dallas photographers don’t get to do very often.
The band’s new album is a bit moodier and darker than the last, so the snowy backdrop was a perfect fit. Who knows when I’ll have another snow shoot? Colorado photogs probably see the wintery weather as just another day in the office, but us southern shooters only get the rare flurry…

Mixed up message…

I think these people had a bad line while talking to God. Maybe there was a lot of static? I’m just guessing, because their message seems to be mixed up from what I was always taught about God’s infinite wisdom and compassion.

Either way, it was sad to see this kind of extremist protesting happening in Dallas, TX. I decided to shoot some of it for a project I’ve been working on. I’ll shed more light on that in the future, but for now, here are some pics of the protest…

GOOOOOAAAALLL!!!!!!!

I am not a very sporty guy. I don’t follow any professional teams for any professional sports. I don’t watch games on television and rarely go to a sporting event. I just have other interests, like music, photography, my family, etc…

With that being said, I still enjoy getting to photograph sports and athletes. I was hired by a corporate client to shoot an event they were hosting/sponsoring with soccer (or futball/European football) legend Claudio Reyna. He was supposed to do a full coaching workshop with area kids, but the weather forced everyone inside. He was still nice enough to talk with all the children and sign autographs.

iPhone pics…

A lot of people have been publishing their iphone (and other brand of camera phone) pictures on the web and in print for a while now. I’m not sure that I’ve ever shared my iphone pics here before, though I do post them on my facebook page and email them to friends and family.
So, I ran through my phone and picked a few favs from the last year, including one from the Warped Tour concert, a wild looking sky and my oldest boy asleep with his trains…

Jason Janik vs. Art and Beer…

Let me first say that I almost NEVER drink alcohol. I’m not against it, I just don’t really care for it. With that being said, you can tell that I’m a little off… a little buzzed during my interview in this video. That’s the last time I accept a free beer sampler at dinner!

But, my rambling, wandering, drunk prose isn’t the point of this video. Nope, KERA’s Art&Seek was covering a really cool art show that I had the pleasure of judging. It was fun seeing all the art up on the walls. It was even more fun seeing some of these artists enjoying their very first art opening.
On a side note, I totally need a haircut, right? After seeing this video, I made an appointment for Wednesday.

Bridezillas? No thanks…

I was out at a nightclub shoot and a camera crew was following around this obnoxious couple. I talked to one of the guys and found out they were filming an episode of Bridezillas. I am so glad that I don’t have to work for that show. It must be such a beating, being around all that negativity. The people on Bridezillas often seem so annoying, mean, whiny, nasty, etc. I wouldn’t want to film that kind of stuff all day. It would be too depressing.

My wife and I used to watch the first season or so, back when they actually documented the real struggles and stress of planning a wedding. However, we stopped watching when it turned into a sort of Jerry Springer fest…

ACL, Here We Come!!!

We will leave for Austin in four hours, so I can shoot yet another Austin City Limits Music Festival. I have photographed ACL every year, except for the very first year. The wife joins me, because she can network the media and sponsor tents for her work, and her parents will watch the baby boys (and cats) at our house. Even though I know they are in good hands, it is hard to leave them for three days straight.

I’ll be doing an ACL blog update for Quick at their website (www.QuickDFW.com), so be sure to follow along all weekend!
